As perturbações neuropsiquiátricas têm um enorme impacto a nível individual e social, representando uma enorme carga psicológica, financeira, académica e social, o que reforça a importância do diagnóstico e intervenção precoces. O nosso principal objetivo é a identificação de novos biomarcadores, focados nas perturbações neuropsiquiátricas, que conduzam ao desenho de intervenções preventivas e terapêuticas adaptadas ao paciente, promovendo a translação para a clínica da investigação fundamental. A investigação desenvolvida no grupo assenta em esforços de colaboração entre investigadores fundamentais e clínicos para acesso a amostras biológicas humanas e dados clínicos. A equipa está integrada em consórcios internacionais que definem metodologias padrão e permitem estudos de grandes dados e ensaios clínicos.
Como líder de referência em doenças neurodegenerativas em Portugal, concentrámo-nos na identificação de biomarcadores cognitivos, imagiológicos e fluidos precoces com potencial aplicação em contextos clínicos. Contribuímos para: (i) padronização das ferramentas cognitivas de rastreio mais utilizadas, testes de memória e escalas comportamentais. (ii) o desenvolvimento de biomarcadores imagiológicos avançados (RMN 3tesla, PET) para a demência, a esclerose múltipla (EM), o acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) e o delírio; (iii) a validação de biomarcadores do LCR para a doença de Alzheimer (DA), a demência fronto-temporal (DFT), as doenças de priões e a EM, alargados mais recentemente a biomarcadores sanguíneos utilizando abordagens automatizadas e de matriz de molécula única (SiMoA), pioneiras no nosso país e disponíveis para grandes grupos.
Globalmente, o nosso trabalho tem contribuído para uma mudança no paradigma de diagnóstico e prognóstico das doenças neurodegenerativas em Portugal, passando de uma perspetiva estritamente clínica para uma abordagem biológica. Temos também estado envolvidos na dissecação de alterações cerebrais em modelos animais, associadas a condições neuropsiquiátricas, como a toxicodependência, e a condições do neurodesenvolvimento, incluindo a Perturbação de Défice de Atenção e Hiperatividade (PHDA), com particular interesse nos processos neurometabólicos, neuroinflamatórios e neurovasculares. Temos também estado envolvidos na identificação do papel do estilo de vida, incluindo o exercício físico, como uma abordagem de intervenção para a saúde do cérebro, a um nível fundamental.
