Visão Geral

O nosso grupo de investigação alcançou marcos significativos em três domínios fundamentais:

1. Melhoria dos resultados científicos e dos recursos humanos.
Nos últimos cinco anos, reforçámos substancialmente os nossos contributos científicos, tendo obtido 11 prémios e sido autores de 30 publicações científicas, incluindo 8 com um Fator de Impacto (FI) > 8, juntamente com 11 capítulos de livros. Notavelmente, 23% estão no top 10% das revistas com base no JIF. A integração da ciência dos dados e da IA na química e na biomedicina é a pedra angular da nossa investigação. Ao desenvolver novas metodologias nestes domínios, contribuímos para a melhoria dos modelos preditivos, dos processos de descoberta de medicamentos e da compreensão dos mecanismos das doenças. Estes avanços não são apenas teóricos, mas têm também implicações práticas para melhorar a eficácia, a segurança e a velocidade de desenvolvimento de novas soluções terapêuticas. Nos últimos anos, várias publicações demonstraram novas ferramentas/pipelines relevantes (por exemplo, DrugTax, DELFOS, SYNPRED, SicknessMiner e a Pipeline de Proteínas de Membrana SARS-CoV-2), estando muitas outras em fase de apresentação. Liderámos e participámos com êxito em 14 subvenções, atraindo diretamente 1 milhão de euros e mais de 34 milhões de horas de CPU, em financiamento competitivo para a contratação de pessoal e contribuindo indiretamente com 7 milhões de euros através de vários projectos.

A nossa equipa cresceu, atraindo investigadores talentosos, incluindo duas posições de Investigador Nacional e nove bolsas de doutoramento. Estabelecemos uma vasta rede de colaborações, tanto a nível nacional como internacional, abrangendo áreas de investigação teóricas e práticas. Através destes esforços específicos, damos contributos significativos tanto para a bioquímica como para a informática, influenciando uma vasta gama de actividades de investigação e desenvolvimento relacionadas com a compreensão da saúde e da doença, o diagnóstico e a terapêutica.

2. Impactos institucionais e educativos. O papel do líder do nosso grupo é fundamental, sendo vice-presidente do BioData.pt, coordenador do nó português do ELIXIR no programa de mestrado em biologia computacional da Universidade de Coimbra e embaixador português do BioExcel. Enriquecemos os currículos académicos com cursos ao nível da licenciatura, mestrado e doutoramento e liderámos cinco workshops, duas conferências e numerosas iniciativas nacionais, tendo os membros do grupo feito mais de 30 apresentações a nível mundial.

3. Inovação e tradução. Co-fundámos a PURR.AI, uma start-up que trabalha na interface da IA e das biociências neurológicas.
