Visão Geral

Durante o processo de envelhecimento, o nosso sistema nervoso sofre alterações naturais, e por vezes patológicas. Juntamente com os nossos colaboradores, o nosso laboratório investiga as alterações morfológicas e funcionais dos neurónios e das sinapses que ocorrem durante o envelhecimento. Mais concretamente, o nosso objetivo é compreender os processos moleculares e celulares que ocorrem na sinapse neuronal, os quais se deterioram com a idade, aumentando a suscetibilidade a doenças. Para tal, utilizamos uma combinação de modelos celulares de ratos e humanos, e diversas metodologias, como eletrofisiologia e imagiologia avançada.
