As doenças cardiovasculares (DCV) são uma das principais causas de morbilidade e mortalidade em todo o mundo e representam um grande encargo para os sistemas de saúde. Para reforçar as capacidades e competências existentes, ultrapassando as fronteiras canónicas e estáticas entre disciplinas, implementámos uma abordagem coerente e inclusiva que reúne investigadores básicos e clínicos, permitindo uma estratégia "from bench to bedside and back again". Em termos de investigação básica, o grupo tem vindo a investigar as estratégias através das quais as células cardíacas comunicam e os mecanismos envolvidos na manutenção de um proteoma saudável. Mais especificamente, pretendemos elucidar de que forma a perturbação da degradação proteica e dos sistemas de comunicação intercelular pode contribuir para a DCV, com particular incidência na autofagia e na comunicação, quer direta, entre células vizinhas, através de junções gap e nanotubos de tunelização, quer a longa distância, através de vesículas extracelulares. Em termos de competências clínicas, o grupo tem duas áreas altamente diferenciadas: a insuficiência cardíaca, bem como a transplantação e a cardiologia de intervenção.
Os membros do grupo estão envolvidos em Centros Nacionais de Referência para intervenção estrutural cardiovascular, hipertensão pulmonar, cardiopatias congénitas e transplante cardíaco, o que nos dá acesso privilegiado a amostras humanas. Temos desenvolvido colaborações frutuosas com outros grupos, nomeadamente na área do metabolismo, medicina regenerativa, modelação computacional para dispersão de fármacos após implantação de stents DES, telemonitorização e aspectos psicológicos das doenças cardiovasculares. A equipa integra competências e recursos em: IC avançada e transplantação, cuidados coronários, intervenção cardíaca estrutural percutânea, eletrofisiologia avançada, hipertensão pulmonar, cardiopatias congénitas, recursos avançados de imagiologia, síncope, telemedicina e telemonitorização.
