Brain Awareness Week

Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is an initiative that aims to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. BAW is celebrated every March and it is coordinated by the Dana Foundation, with the support of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). In Portugal, the campaign is coordinated by the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience (SPN) in collaboration with Ciência Viva.

CIBB celebrates BAW every year, providing activities for school audience and the general public. Researchers visit schools and carry out games, “hands-on” activities and lectures on brain-related subjects. Open Labs allow the public to get to know the research carried out at CIBB. Several events such as exhibitions, concerts, science cafes, lectures and debates are also organized during BAW.

Testimonies

"I really liked the clear and simple way the researcher explained things to us that weren't so simple. The researcher made them very easy to understand."

Aluno do 10º ano da Escola Secundária Infanta Dona Maria (2021)

"(...) I really enjoyed relating my knowledge to something more practical and real."

Aluno do 11º ano, Escola Secundária Fernando Namora (2021)

"(...) In all cases, the students later recall the subjects/particulars covered during the sessions. My recommendation is that we should continue to take advantage of these lectures, which give practical meaning to the work we do in schools."

Docente do Ensino Secundário do Agrupamento de Escolas de Condeixa-a-Nova (2021)

"The session involved the children as if it had been face-to-face. (...) They were attentive and tried to participate orally. The next day some parents said that their children had been able to tell what they had done at home."
