Open Science

The Open Science platform is a gateway to the services, tools and resources necessary to streamline engagement and participation of CiBB researchers in Responsible Research within an Open Science framework. It primarily focuses on three key perspectives: Open Access publishing, Open Research Data and Ethics & Open Data, following CiBB’s Research Data Management (RDM) internal policy.

Services, Tools and Resources

Training

To actively engage the research community in these (and other) Open Science good practices, CiBB organizes training sessions, typically delivered in the context of the regular advanced courses. Among others, topics include RDM basic concepts, data sharing and storage, and hands-on writing of a Data Management Plan (DMP) – within the Experimental Science Design course, Data Visualization – within the One Health course, or tools and indicators of research performance – within the Introduction to the Science of Science.

UC’s Institute of Interdisciplinary Research (iiiUC) also offers a few training opportunities, e.g., a selection of Nature MasterClasses, covering topics like research data management, data analysis and scientific integrity, among others.
BioData.pt (a distributed infrastructure for Life and Health data) regularly offers intensive/short courses in data stewardship.

Tools and Resources

CiBB features a number of relevant members trained in data governance and stewardship that can support researchers in these matters (see Team). The ERA Chair EXCELScIOR features several coordination and support measures towards making CiBB’s scholarly research more collaborative, transparent and reproducible, as well as readily and publicly available (in light of the FAIR principles). The Teaming MIA-Portugal features the establishment of a high-capacity data center in the new UC BIOMED building.

CiBB Performance and Goals

OA publishing: During the 2018-2023 period, over 71% of CiBB’s scholarly publications were Open Access. Our goal is to have at least 90% of CiBB’s scientific publications in Gold or Green OA by 2029, and to make preprints consistently available upon submission.

FAIR Data: implementation of FAIR data management was deployed during 2018-2023, piloted by transformative, institutional projects like the ERA Chairs DYNABrain and EXCELScIOR, and the Teaming MIA Portugal. By 2029, we aim to attain effective research data management over the entire lifecycle of all CiBB’s R&I projects.
