CuidIn - Supporting and Caring for the Informal Carer

Overview

Project Summary

It is predicted that by 2030 around 1 in 8 people in the world will be aged 65 or over, creating ever greater care needs for the increasingly ageing and dependent population. Despite medical and technological progress, increasing longevity and the rise in chronic illnesses have led to a significant increase in the number of patients who "can't be cured", and the desire of patients/dependents to live at home, with their families, in a familiar and welcoming environment makes it essential that there is someone capable, motivated and available to provide hygiene and comfort care, food, administer medication and, above all, accompany them.

The Informal Carer (IC), who provides partial or total care for the person, whether or not they are ill, with varying degrees of dependency, regardless of age, whether or not they are a family member, is a key figure in this context.

However, the lack of preparation, time commitment and effort associated with care can have a negative impact on the IC, associating negative physical, mental and emotional states, for various reasons, with repercussions on the lack of quality of life of the IC, the cared-for person and their families.

Main Goals

Thus, the CuidIn project aims to:

  • Support and care for the informal carer through an integrated network of training and qualification of informal carers, supported by a social and interdisciplinary support network, based on an intervention with technical scientific pedagogical foundations, generating social impact.

Specific objectives:

  • To promote the training of informal carers in the process of caring for people with dependency, in a home context.
  • Densify and qualify the social and interdisciplinary support network (network of professionals, technicians and citizen volunteers).
  • To promote quality of life and satisfaction in caring for informal carers, with an impact on patients, their families and the community

The project cover the municipality of Cantanhede; target audience: informal carers who provide care for dependent people living in the municipality of Cantanhede.
