RECOGNISED - Retinal and Cognitive Dysfunction in Type 2 Diabetes: Unraveling the Common Pathways and Identification of Patients at Risk of Dementia

Overview

Project Summary

RECOGNISED is a multicentre, multinational study that aims to investigate the common mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and cognitive impairment in the type 2 diabetes (T2D). The main goal is to use the retina as a tool to identifying individuals with T2D at a higher risk of developing cognitive decline or dementia.

Main Goals

The general concept of this project is based on the notion that the retina can be used as a window to the brain due to their common embryologic origin. Therefore, the study of the retina in T2D patients in this project will be useful to identify not only those patients at risk of developing dementia, but also different phenotypes with diverse degrees of cognitive decline in terms of velocity and severity. In addition, the study of the common pathogenic pathways involved in the neurodegenerative processes that occurs in the brain and the retina will open up a new research area with clear therapeutic implications.
