Neuropsychiatric disorders have a huge impact at an individual and society level, posing a tremendous amount of psychological, financial, academic, and social burden, which reinforces the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Our main goal is the identification of new biomarkers, focused on neuropsychiatric disorders, leading to the design of patient-tailored preventive and therapeutic interventions, promoting the translation to the clinic of fundamental research. The research developed in the group relies on collaborative efforts between fundamental researchers and clinicians for access to human biological samples and clinical data. The team is integrated in international consortia that define standard methodologies and allow for big-data studies and clinical trials.
As a leading reference in neurodegenerative disorders in Portugal we have focus on identifying early cognitive, imaging and fluid biomarkers with potential application in clinical settings. We contributed to: (i) standardization of the most used screening cognitive tools, memory tests and behavioral scales. (ii) development of advanced imaging biomarkers (3tesla MRI, PET imaging) for dementia, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Stroke and Delirium; (iii) validate CSF biomarkers for Alzheimer´s disease (AD), Fronto-Temporal Dementia (FTD), Prion diseases and MS, extended more recently to blood biomarkers using both automated and Single Molecule Array (SiMoA) approaches, pioneer in our country and available to large cohorts.
Overall, our work has contributed to a change in the diagnostic and prognostic paradigm of neurodegenerative diseases in Portugal, moving from a strictly clinical perspective towards a biological approach. We have also been involved in dissecting brain alterations in animal models, associated with neuropsychiatric conditions, such as drug abuse, and with neurodevelopmental conditions, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), with particularly interest in neurometabolic, neuroinflammatory and neurovascular processes. We have also been involved in pinpointing the role of lifestyle including physical exercise as an interventional approach for brain health, at a fundamental level.
