Overview

Célia Gomes is Principal Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) and Group Leader of the Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis Group at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), which integrates the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), a research consortium of the University of Coimbra. Célia Gomes received her BSc in Biochemistry in 1992, MSc in Biomedical Engineering in 1996, and Ph.D in Biomedical Sciences in 2008, from the University of Coimbra. During her PhD studies, she spent two years working on a multidisciplinary research project in bone tumors at the Departments of Pathology and Radiology-Division of Nuclear Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in the Netherlands. After completing her PhD in 2008, she was hired as an assistant researcher at FMUC and established an independent research line focused on cancer stem cell biology. She was interested in understanding cancer cell plasticity and how it confers survival advantage to cancer stem cells in response to therapy and in developing therapeutic strategies to overcome drug resistance. Recently, she has broadened her research interests to metastatic cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related death. She is interested in understanding how tumor cells exploit the microenvironment to predispose secondary organs to metastatic colonization and outgrowth. She envisions the development of strategies to disrupt this microenvironmental support, ranging from targeted therapies to immunotherapy and nanomedicines. She participates as a PI/co-PI or team member in several research projects funded by national and international funding agencies, including the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), European Astellas Foundation, QREN, LPCC, Lions, and APU. CG published over 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, the majority in international quartile 1 (Q1) journals, including Neuro-Oncology, J Exp Clin Cancer Res, Small, Cancer Letters, J Extracel Vesicles, Cell Report, and Pharmacol Research, having over 1900 citations and an H-index of 27 (source: WoS). She is actively enrolled in Master’s and PhD programs at UC as a lecturer, and is in charge of the oncobiology area of the Master in Biomedical Research at FMUC. She supervised several PhD (4 concluded, 7 ongoing) and Master (>30 concluded) students, research fellows, and ERASMUS students.
