Overview

Joana Ferreira is a neuroscientist specializing in the nanoscale architecture of synapses and their impact on brain function and ageing. She earned her PhD in Biosciences (Neurosciences) from the University of Coimbra in 2012, conducting her research jointly at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (Portugal) and the University of British Columbia (Canada). Following her doctoral work, Joana led postdoctoral research on the molecular mechanisms of glutamate receptor trafficking at CNC, and later joined the Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience (CNRS, University of Bordeaux) to investigate the nanoscale organization of NMDA receptors. In 2021, she returned to the University of Coimbra as an Assistant Investigator through an FCT competitive call, establishing her independent research line on synaptic structure, trans-synaptic signaling, and neurological disease mechanisms. Today, Joana is a Principal Investigator at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA), where she leads the Synapse Architecture group. Her team explores how age-related nanoscale synaptic changes shape cognitive performance, integrating molecular neuroscience with state-of-the-art super-resolution imaging. She is recognized for her expertise in molecular imaging of NMDARs and advanced single-molecule microscopy techniques. Joana has authored 23 scientific publications—including first-author papers in Neuron and PNAS—and has extensive experience mentoring students and early-career researchers. She is an active contributor to international training programs, including the CAJAL Advanced Neuroscience Training Program, and has served on multiple academic committees and thesis juries across Europe. She has organized major scientific events, from FENS Regional Meeting symposiums to advanced imaging courses, and leads multiple funded research projects at national and international levels. Her work has been recognized with several distinctions, including a Special Recognition in Science from the World Cultural Council (2022) and nomination as a Jeanne Marie Lee Investigator by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.
