CiBB4Health+ is an institutional project leveraged by CiBB, the largest hub of excellence of the CENTRO region in Biomedicine and Medical Biotechnology, the two defining R&I areas of the project. It aims to discover innovative therapeutic solutions for a set of target diseases (chronic or still incurable), paving the way for a future that will allow us to be active and healthy throughout our entire life.
CiBB4Health+ brings together the three research centers of the University of Coimbra that integrate the UID CiBB – the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) and the Centre for Health Studies and Research (CEISUC). The project develops R&D activities in the context of CiBB’s four strategic research areas and of two major transformative initiatives – the Teamings MIA Portugal and GeneT – aimed at implementing in the CENTRO region two Centers of Excellence (CoE) in the areas of Ageing and Gene Therapy respectively.
[1] Improve our understanding of the causes and mechanisms of disease responsible for brain diseases, and diseases associated with obesity and ageing.
[2] Identify biomarkers for those diseases, and translate them to the clinical practice, aiming at their early detection.
[3] Make use of the acquired knowledge on the disease mechanisms to identify and test new therapeutic targets for their treatment.
[4] Develop and test biotechnology-based advanced therapeutic strategies for effective, long-lasting, and low-maintenance treatments.
[5] Take advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to identify new drugs and to optimize tools for gene therapy.
[6] Identify and test innovative strategies to improve healthcare for the elderly and their caretakers.
[7] Foster added-value creation based on the results of the proposed activities, which we anticipate, will generate intellectual property (IP) that can potentially be licensed/transferred or give rise to new services.
